Kenkre Champions League- A roaring start to the tournament, an overall report from Day 1

Toddlers sprinting with football, dribbling across mushy green turfs, along with their parents and coaches yelling at the top of their voices – this was the scene at Don Bosco, Matunga this Sunday, when the rest of Mumbai woke up to a leisure weekend. It was the occasion of  the 5th  Kenkre  Champions League,  powered by Rustomjee, popularly known as Sunday league; kicking off their journey  this year. It was a treat to the eyes as all the youngsters produced a flourishing display in front of the awestruck adults.

The 7-a-side league with five age categories for boys and 3 age categories for girls saw brilliant competitiveness and skills on the first day wherein 19 main league matches happened. Let’s sneak across to the highlights of the day.

U-10 boys – Surprisingly the toddlers of this age group were talk of the day, as they showed some breathtaking display.  Don Bosco A vs FFA A was a spectacular show ending in 1-1 draw, followed by another spectacular stalemate 3-3, between FFA B and OIS Champ. Raghav Kanodia, the prodigy was the center of attraction, when Scottish Devils pipped OIS Champ 2-1. Raghav was again spectacular in their tie against FFA B, although coming up short in a 2-0 loss. FFA B ended their day with another draw, this time goalless with Baycity Bombers. In other matches,  FFA A breezed past AB Champs  5-1, with Ali finding the net twice after AB Champs were similarly vanquished by Don Bosco A, 7-0, as Yohan fired in a hat-trick. Meanwhile Golden Eaglets aided by Aum Jaggi’s brilliant hat-trick defeated FFA C 5-3.

U-12 boys- The tournament kicked off with the first match of this category played between ABWA United and Kenkre06 Blue. In a goal-fest Kenkre06 Yellow thumped past ABWA United 8-0 with Hanzala, Karan and Zahra scoring brace, each. ABWA Utd crushed to their second defeat when Kenkre 06 Blues registered a comfortable 7-0 win over them with Eshan and Iwan dazzling with a hat-trick each. In a cracker of a match, Kenkre06 Yellow emerged victorious over their blue counterparts 3-1. Meanwhile OIS United defeated Bosco Dragons 2-1 but lost to FFA A 2-3. FFA B and Baycity Bombers played out an exciting game before it ended goalless.

U-14 boys- Golden Eaglets showcased similar form in this age category also; holding SSE Lions to a 1-1 tie. SSE Lions squeezed past DAIS United 3-0, courtesy a brace by Joy. SSE Tigers, however slumped to a 4-1 defeat against Silent Assasins owing to subtle strikes from Tamish Kathuria.

19 matches, 71 goals! Expect temperature to get even higher on each lazy Sunday morning as the footballing future of this city promises to replicate the popular saying – Morning shows the day when they meet again in the Sunday League!
